optus sent me a text message saying that they had upgraded their network in the Lindfield NSW area, so I decided to test it against my Vodafone service. There is a 3G tower at the end of my street, you can almost see it from my back garden, 3G services on the Telstra and Vodafone networks are very good so I have no idea why the optus service is so slow. Voice calls drop out, text messages don't always get sent, and data services are seriously slow. View the video and let it be a warning if you are considering going with optus, Virgin, or another provider using the network. I recorded the loading times of random webpages loaded using the Dolphin HD browser, times recorded only after the page was fully loaded (when the green loading bar is gone). After the testing the two together I connected the optus phone to Vodafone Wifi to show the phone is performing correctly. The difference between optus and other networks is very clear, and having used the different services around Sydney from 2010-12, optus is very far behind.

The Samsung Galaxy S2 from optus arrived today. I was so excited I went straight outside and took some 1080p video... First impressions: It's very nice with continuous auto focus and quite good audio capture as well. The screen is beautiful and easily visible outside. Apparently it can even make phone calls (I will try that later) I haven't had much of a play yet, but I can confidently say that my Nexus One will be retired from general use and reassigned to technical projects!
